Local SEO for painters: how to show up on Google Maps

What to check on your Google Business Profile, photos, reviews and service pages so more homeowners find your painting company.

Local SEO for painters: how to show up on Google Maps

When someone searches for "painters near me" or "house painters Calgary", Google usually shows a map with three companies first. Many people choose right there, without opening a website. That is why local SEO is one of the investments that makes the most sense for a painter.

There are no tricks. Google tries to show businesses that are relevant, nearby and well reviewed. Your job is to make that clear.

Complete your Google Business Profile

Go through these one by one:

  • Name: your real business name, with no added keywords. Adding "Best Painter Calgary" to the name breaks Google's rules.
  • Primary category: "Painter" or "Painting contractor", depending on what Google offers.
  • Service area: if you go to customers and do not receive visitors at an office, set it up as a service-area business and hide the address.
  • Services: add each one with a short description: interior painting, exterior painting, cabinets, deck staining, commercial painting.
  • Hours and phone: they should match when you actually answer.

Upload real photos, often

Photos are your best sales argument. Upload finished jobs, before and after shots, your crew at work (with permission) and your truck if it is branded. Do it steadily, not twenty photos one day and nothing for six months.

Avoid stock photos. Customers notice, and they do not show your work.

Ask every happy customer for a review

Reviews affect visibility and, more importantly, the customer's decision. Ask for a review when each job is finished, with a direct link. Reply to all of them, including negative ones, in a calm and professional way. There are more ideas in the review guide for painting contractors.

Create a page for each service

Your website helps Google understand what you do. One page that says "we do all kinds of painting" competes worse than specific pages for:

  • Interior painting.
  • Exterior painting.
  • Cabinet painting.
  • Commercial painting, if you offer it.

Each page should explain what the job includes, show photos of that type of project, mention the areas you serve and have an estimate button.

Keep your details the same everywhere

Your name, phone and service area should match on Google, your website, Facebook, Houzz, HomeStars and any directory you appear in. Differences confuse both Google and customers.

Measure what matters

Your Google profile shows calls, website clicks and direction requests. Compare those numbers with the estimate requests you actually receive. If views go up but calls do not, the problem is usually the photos, the reviews or the profile information.
